- Most of the ABC's of Surface Enhancements
The ABC's of surface enhancements are, of course, Acrylics, Burning, and Carving. In this demo, we'll cover the first two. The focus is on the creative use of pyrography (woodburning) tools to produce patterns, textures, and icons on turned objects. We will also briefly cover the use of acrylics for coloring turned wood.
- Designing and Making Teapots
Designing and Making Teapots - In this demo, we use a teapot as a focus for a discussion on designing and making objects with turned parts. Joining the parts is a major challenge. Some limited amount of group participation is expected. A small bit of turning will be demonstrated. Secrets may be revealed.
- Adding Texture and Color to Turned Wood
I will demonstrate techniques for using wood bleach, stain, and paint to embellish wood. Learn how to create patterns and texture using a variety of tools. Design will be considered, especially the layering of techniques to achieve pleasing results.
- Creating With Turned Forms
Many of the forms we turn on a lathe can be use as the basis for creating other objects, as well as the beginning stages of sculpture. Join me to discover new ways to consider using turned objects. I will turn various forms, then demonstrate the safe use of a bandsaw to cut these turned objects, all the stages necessary to create candle holders and sculpture!
- The Emergence of a Series
In this slide/talk session I will discuss design ideas and design theory as it applies to turned forms. A lively, interactive discussion will focus on developing an idea, from inception to finish. Bring your own ideas and questions to participate in the discussion. My objective is to get each participant thinking about their own work and how to apply their interests directly to their creations.
- "Rock-A-Box" - 3 Rotations (designed by: Mark St.Leger)
This unique box is turned on the Bias-utilizing lathe made jigs for turning the lid and eccentric finial. Creating of the jigs will be part of the demonstration. When completed the box will gently rock with the sound of a tick-tock until it comes to its final resting balance.
- Third Axis in Motion - 2 Rotations (designed by: Mark St.Leger)
This box incorporates multi axis turning, this small box is turned on 3 different axis’s with a hand-chased threaded handle and eccentric finial. The demonstration will also include the making of lathe turned jigs to create this box. When completed this box will gently sway & rock until it finds it balance.

Sculpting Wood Beyond the Lathe
The lathe is a great sculpting tool and is how all of
my work begins, but there are numerous other ways to
work with wood. In this demo I will show a tremendous
amount of techniques and equipment for sculpting wood
from aggressive tools like chainsaws and grinders to
the finest of finishing and detailing tools.
Participants can expect to learn lots of ways to
sculpt wood into their desired shapes as well as be
amazed by all the ways that wood can be manipulated.
-
Vessels of Illusion
In this demo participants will not only learn all the
techniques that I go through in the creation of this
body of work but how I developed it and why - making
this much more than just a hollow form demo.
This demonstration will include turning the outer
hollow form, carving the vessel, turning the insert,
using wood bending to get the insert in the outer
vessel, and principals of wood bending for
woodturners.
Participants will walk away from this session with a
lot of good solid technical information on tuning,
carving, and wood bending, as well as how to come up
with your own ideas and where to look for inspiration.

Decorative Utility Bowls
In this session I rough turn a bowl from green wood,
discuss drying techniques including kiln drying and
building your own kiln as well as very simple and
basic techniques. Then I re-turn a dry bowl using
specially ground tools to get as clean a cut as
possible to cut down on sanding. I will then take
that bowl and discuss and use lots of different
decorative techniques including: carving techniques,
bleaching, dying, painting, burning, sand blasting,
and surface textures.
All in all the participant will learn everything they
need to know to turn their own decorative utility
bowl. They'll also walk away with numerous decoration
ideas.
